Look beyond the obvious colour
Leaves attract attention, but a season also changes the light on bark, the shape of grasses and the way a path sounds underfoot. Pick a small patch and look closely rather than trying to take in the whole landscape at once.
Choose a repeatable view
Photograph the same view occasionally from a similar position. The result need not become a formal project. A few images can make gradual change easier to see and remind you how different a familiar place can feel.
Stay flexible
A walk can be shorter than planned. Check current conditions before leaving, take appropriate clothing and turn back if the route is uncomfortable. The useful observation is the one you can make without feeling rushed or committed to a particular distance.
